Project Based Learning Partnerships
Sandwich STEM Academy
The STEM Academy stands for "Strategies that Engage the Mind". The focus for our school is to engage each and every student using project-based learning and interdisciplinary units.
The Sandwich Public Schools partners with a number of local and national organizations who provide:
The Responsive Classroom
"The Responsive Classroom approach to teaching emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. We believe that how children learn is as important as what they learn, and that academic success is inextricably tied to building social-emotional competencies. We provide K-8 educators with practical training and resources to help create safe and joyful classrooms and schools where children can thrive. "- from the RC website
Social Thinking
"Our Mission: to explore the abstract nature of the social world and to teach how others can improve their social interpretation and social competencies using concretely defined frameworks and strategies. We help each person develop their social self-awareness, perspective taking, and social self-management skills to meet their personal goals. Social goals can include helping children to learn to relate to others, to work effectively as part of a team, and to learn effectively as part of a group." - from the Social Thinking website
Sandwich Public Library
The partnership that we enjoy with the Sandwich Public Libraryis one of the most impactful and supportive for all children in Sandwich.
The Summer Reading Program, which is sponsored by Sandwich Kiwanis, inspires students to continue with the reading habit we work so hard to instill during the school year.
The special reading superpowers come from Mr. Parsons and Ms. Johson. We are thankful for them every day in Sandwich.
Green Briar Nature Center
Green Briar Nature Center fully supports science and nature teaching and learning in the Elementary Schools and also provides powerful Experiential Learning for our SHS students. For many years, Green Briar Educator Mary Beers has worked with the SHS Environmental Science Class to train SHS students to teach our 4th graders about Life in the Cape Cod Forest.
Every grade level enjoyes a Unit of Study with Green Briar that includes Field Work, Interactive Lessons and opportunities to study plants and animals upfront and personal!
Cape Cod STEM Network
Students and teachers have benefited greatly from the opportunities available through the Cape Cod Regional STEM Newtork. Student activities and opportunities have ranged from robotics, field work and regional presentations at Cape Cod Community College. Teachers have enjoyed opportunities to work collaboratively with colleagues from around the Cape, and with local leaders in Science Education.
