Bridgewater State University
The Leading for Change Higher Education Diversity Consortium is a voluntary collaboration of higher education institutions in Massachusetts and New England committed to identifying student and employee diversity best practices through uniform and transparent use of data, institutional benchmarks and reflective practice. Experts from Bridgewater State University, Emerson College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bristol Community College and Harvard University have worked together to identify student and employee benchmarks for success in higher education. The consortium’s benchmarks were unveiled at the June 11, 2014 Leading for Change Conference at Bridgewater State University. Public and private institutions are invited to join the consortium.

Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP)
PEP is a program for undergraduates who want to spend a summer gaining practical experience in marine and environmental science. Designed primarily for students entering their junior or senior year, PEP consists of a four-week course and a six-to-ten week research project, both offered in the sea-side village of Woods Hole. PEP is a diversity program that welcomes students from all backgrounds. Students from minority populations under-represented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are especially encouraged to apply – this includes African American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaska Native, and Asian Pacific Island students.

Semester at Sea Program (SEA)
SEA Semester teaches undergraduates about the ocean and the interactions that we as human beings have developed with the sea. Given that the ocean covers 70% of the planet, our subject matter is of a very global nature. SEA works very hard to reflect global diversity in everything we do. Whether it is the students we reach out to, the island nations we visit, or the international institutions we partner with, we strive to incorporate the vital energy of the world's diverse peoples into our programs. At SEA, we believe that the ocean doesn't separate us; it connects us.
Under a pioneering partnership with the other scientific institutions in Woods Hole, the Woods Hole Diversity Advisory Committee, SEA has created opportunities for students from all backgrounds to learn about the ocean. Those opportunities are realized through the Partnership Education Program (PEP), a multi-institutional effort to promote diversity in the Woods Hole scientific community. PEP provides fellowships for summer study and research internships and is designed primarily for college juniors and seniors who want to spend a summer gaining practical experience in marine and environmental science. Other participating institutions include NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, U. S. Geological Survey, Marine Biological Laboratory, and Woods Hole Research Center.
SEA is also committed to making SEA Semester a more diverse program. We have partnered with Diversity Abroad, the leading global education organization which targets non-traditional students for international education opportunities. DA’s mission is to ensure that students from diverse economic, educational, ethnic and social backgrounds are aware, have equal access to, and take advantage of the benefits and opportunities afforded through global education exchanges.
Finally, we have made generous amounts of financial aid available to ensure that all qualified and motivated students can afford to participate in SEA Semester. We offer a number of Diversification Merit Awards for students whose participation in SEA Semester will diversify to the SEA community.
